Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Traditional festivals serve as cultural milestones that preserve the heritage, customs, and values of communities. They are a source of cultural pride and identity, offering opportunities for economic growth and tourism development. Local newspapers, as an accessible medium in many communities, play a crucial role in documenting these festivals, thereby ensuring their preservation and wider dissemination. In Kauran Namoda Local Government Area, Zamfara State, traditional festivals such as Durbar and cultural dances are significant events that strengthen community bonds and attract visitors. However, the documentation of these events by local newspapers has implications for cultural preservation, public awareness, and the promotion of local heritage (Yakubu & Ahmed, 2023). This study explores how local newspapers in Kauran Namoda document traditional festivals, evaluating their role in cultural preservation and promotion.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of traditional festivals in preserving cultural heritage, their documentation in local newspapers remains inconsistent and often inadequate. Many festivals in Kauran Namoda are celebrated without comprehensive coverage, which limits their visibility and diminishes opportunities for preservation and promotion. Challenges such as limited resources, lack of specialized cultural reporters, and the prioritization of other news stories contribute to this problem. Consequently, the role of local newspapers in capturing and archiving these cultural events has not been fully realized, creating a gap in cultural documentation that this study seeks to address.
